Long-Haul Flight With Kids: The Plane Bag Packing List
Travel with kids is a logistics problem dressed up as a vacation. I have overpacked. I have underpacked. I have done both on the same trip, mind you. This is what we fly with now.

Pack for three phases, not one flight
A long flight has a busy start, a long sleepy middle and a restless end. Pack something for each phase and hand items out one at a time. One gift a stage beats a bag dumped on the tray table.
Phase 1: Take-off and the first two hours
New activities that make no mess.
Crayola Color Wonder Mess-Free Markers
Markers that only show up on Color Wonder paper. No ink on seats, clothes or tray tables.
Mad Libs Junior Travel Pack
Fill-in-the-word story games made for young kids. Screen-free laughs in a carry-on.
Phase 2: The long middle
Headphones that protect little ears, and a pillow that makes sleeping upright possible.
PuroQuiet Volume-Limited Kid Headphones
Noise-cancelling kids' headphones with volume limited to 85 dB. For flights and long drives.
BCozzy Kid Travel Neck Pillow
A kid-size travel pillow that supports the chin, so sleeping sitting up actually works.
Phase 3: Landing and the hotel
A dark room and familiar sounds help jet-lagged kids sleep.
Hatch Rest Mini
A small sound machine with a soft night light. Packs easily for hotel rooms.
Tommee Tippee Sleeptight Window Cover
A portable blackout blind that sticks to most windows. Keeps early-morning hotel light out.
The mom carry-on
Anker PowerCore 10000 PD Slim Power Bank
A slim 10,000 mAh power bank with fast USB-C charging. About two phone charges.
Cabeau Evolution S3 Travel Pillow
A memory foam travel pillow that clips to the seat so your head does not drop forward.
