What to Stock for the Day Help Doesn't Show Up

The cook calls in sick. The nanny has an emergency. School shuts and I have a presentation in 90 minutes. Fun, right? Wrong. So I run the house like a project with a risk register. This is the contingency plan.

The rule: decide on the good day, not the bad one

On the bad day you have no time and no patience. So every decision gets made earlier: what goes in the freezer, what sits on the shelf, what the kids reach for. Think of it like a spare tire. Nobody admires it until the day it saves the trip.

1. The frozen drawer

Cook double once a week and freeze the extra in single portions. Flat bags stack, cubes thaw fast, and dinner on the bad day is a reheat.

2. The emergency shelf

A handful of pantry items turn plain rice or pasta into a meal. Stock paste, a good grater and clear containers so you can see what's running low.

3. The 15-minute tools

These are the machines that cook while you do something else.

4. The kid distraction kit

Keep a box the kids only see on these days. Novelty is the whole trick.

5. The mom reset

You count too. Good coffee, water within reach and hand cream by the sink are small, but small is what you have time for.
