Winter Break With Kids: One Plan a Day, Not One an Hour

How to get through two weeks off school without scheduling every minute.

Two weeks off school can feel like a gap you have to fill. Every hour. With something.

You don't.

The rule

One plan a day. A park in the morning, a playdate, a trip to the library, a baking afternoon. Just one.

Then let the rest of the day be boring. Boring is where the forts come from. And the made-up games, and the long elaborate stories that end in an argument about who's the dragon.

Ten one-plan days

1. The park, with a ball and a flask of hot chocolate.
2. The library. Each of you picks a book for the other.
3. A baking afternoon. Whatever you make, it counts.
4. A playdate at yours, zero setup.
5. A long walk with a scavenger list.
6. A movie morning, with popcorn, in pyjamas.
7. A big puzzle on the floor that stays out all week.
8. A craft kit, start to finish.
9. Board games after dinner.
10. Pack a picnic and eat it somewhere new.
